Version 1.2.10: Cooler Phones, Fairer Layoffs

A game about money should make your wallet nervous, not your phone warm. Version 1.2.10 cools things down, and changes what happens to your paycheck when you get fired.
Why your phone was warm
Players told us that iPhones, including the 15 and the 16 Pro Max, were heating up during games, and that the web version ran a little warm too. We would love to say it was the sheer sex appeal of compound interest. It was four separate bits of overwork.
- A timer that redrew everything. The game counted idle seconds by updating the screen once a second, in every mode, which re-rendered the whole board, every space and every panel. Forever.
- Pawns drawing too often. The animated pawns repainted far more often than their animations needed, especially on phones with fast displays.
- A blur nobody could enjoy. The frosted backdrop behind every card was recalculated on every frame, because the pawn kept moving underneath it.
- Glows that cost a repaint. The pulsing glow on the active space and the rings around the End Turn button animated shadows, which forces the phone to redraw them on every frame.
What we changed
The idle timer is now a single timeout. Pawns draw only the frames they need, and they pause when they are scrolled off screen, when reduced motion is on, or when a card or the dreams window is covering the board. The board holds still under a card. The attention-seeking animations, meaning the glow on your space, the ring around your pawn, the End Turn button, the Borrow button, the freedom badge and the daily quest card, now pulse a few times and then rest. Your active pawn settles on a soft gold glow that costs nothing once it has been painted.
The numbers
We measured with a headless browser sitting on the board for ten seconds, doing nothing. Main-thread time fell from 624 milliseconds to 15, roughly 2% of what it was. With a card open and the dragon pawn on the board, it fell from 1,188 milliseconds to 11. Your phone now spends its idle time the way you spend yours: doing very little, on purpose.
Fairer layoffs
A layoff skips your next few paydays. Until now a skipped payday skipped everything, so your side income vanished along with your salary, which is not how owning a rental flat works. From 1.2.10 only the salary stops. A skipped payday still credits your side income after tax, and your expenses and taxes still come due.
Two people, one layoff.
Someone whose side income covers their bills sails through a laid-off payday. Someone with no side income watches the same bills drain their cash. A layoff should cost you something unless your assets are covering the bills, and now it does.
We also fixed a single-player bug where crossing several paydays in one roll skipped all of them even when you had fewer skips left, and the skip message now shows the side income you still received. Being fired should sting. It should not delete your side hustle.
The story behind the heat, told from a different angle, is in Going Public. Next in the series is 1.2.11.
The release notes, word for word
Cooler phones: the game no longer keeps your device working hard while you play. Idle animations pulse a few times and then rest, and the board stops redrawing every second. Layoffs are fairer: only your salary stops, side income keeps paying, and expenses are still due on skipped paydays.
