What is Moneyflow?
A financial strategy board game where you build side income, escape the 9-to-5, and achieve your dreams.
How to Play
- Pick a persona — each has unique salary, debts, and expenses.
- Roll dice, move around the board, and land on spaces that let you buy assets, face expenses, or get opportunities.
- Every time you pass a Payday space, you collect your cashflow (Income − Expenses − Taxes).
Goal
Build enough side income to cover all your expenses — that's your escape from the 9-to-5. Then pick 2 Dreams and buy them to win.
Quick Tips
- 💰 Cashflow is king. Focus on monthly income, not one-time gains.
- 🚫 Avoid unnecessary debt. Every loan adds monthly expenses.
- 💪 Resist impulse buys. Lifestyle inflation slows your escape.
- 📉 Watch interest rates. Borrow when low, pay off when high.
The Board
28 spaces in a loop. Roll two dice and move clockwise. Four corners are fixed: START and three PAYDAY spaces.
When you pass through or land on a Payday/Start space, you collect your monthly cashflow (Salary + Side Income − Expenses − Taxes). Negative cashflow means you lose money.
Your Financial Statement
- Cash — Money on hand
- Income — Salary + Side Income
- Expenses — Monthly bills & loan payments
- Assets — Properties, stocks, businesses
- Liabilities — Outstanding loans
- Cashflow — Income minus Expenses minus Taxes (payday amount)
Banks check two things: Debt Burden (all your loan payments as a share of income, limit 67%) and Leverage (total debt as a share of assets + cash, limit 80%). Borrow-button and bank loans are judged on income alone, each one counted as if its principal were repaid over 7 years. Purchase loans (mortgages, business loans, bridge loans, margin) and borrowing against an asset are approved if either test passes.
Loan terms: mortgages repay over 25 years and business loans over 15 years, both after 6 paydays of interest only; car loans repay over 6 years from the first payday. All three are paid automatically every payday. Borrow-button and bank loans charge interest only: you repay the principal from the Pay menu whenever you like.
Space Types
Investment Spaces
- Real Estate — Buy rentals. Pay down payment, take mortgage, earn cashflow. Rents follow the market: about 6–7% of the price per year in a bust, 9–11% in a recovery, 13–15% in a boom — locked in when you buy.
- Stocks — Slider to choose shares. Quick-pick 25/50/75/100%. Toggle margin.
- Business — Vending machines, laundromats, car washes for side income. Returns follow the market like rentals, plus a 3.5-point premium: about 9.5–10.5% of the price per year in a bust, 12.5–14.5% in a recovery, 16.5–18.5% in a boom.
- Startup — High-risk dice roll. Multiply your money or lose it all.
Income Spaces
- Payday / Start — Collect cashflow. Some include bonuses.
- Bonus — Windfall cash (refunds, inheritance, lottery).
Expense Spaces
- Shop — Temptations. You can buy or resist.
- Life — Babies, weddings, promotions, emergencies, upgrades, inheritance, and more. Divorce splits the estate: half your cash and half your property, debts included.
- Layoff — Lose your job: 1–4 paydays without salary (side income and expenses still apply). May get severance.
Financial Spaces
- Bank — Loans, debt payoff, consolidation, refinance, credit cards.
- Deal — One-time opportunities: wholesale, buyouts, stock tips.
- Market — Events affecting everyone: booms, crashes, rate hikes.
Advisory Spaces
- Mentor — Drawn from Life spaces. Open a savings certificate (10% of every paycheck withheld, earns interest, sell any time), get debt help, free picks.
- Charity — Donate a share of your cash (5–10%), get an extra dice roll.
- Fed Policy — Interest rate changes that affect all loans.
The Economy
- Interest Rate (starts 5.0%) — Affects new loan costs. Rises with borrowing.
- Inflation (starts 2.0%) — Tracks money supply pressure.
- Leverage — Liabilities ÷ (Assets + Cash). Banks limit it to 80%. Purchase loans and loans against an asset can pass on leverage even when Debt Burden is over its limit.
- Debt Burden — Loan payments ÷ Income, interest-only bank loans counted with their principal. Banks limit it to 67%. Higher income = more borrowing power.
- Taxes — Income tax is taken from salary in brackets (12% on the first $2,000/mo, 20% to $4,000, 28% to $7,000, 34% to $12,000, 40% above). Side income is taxed 15% every payday, and profitable sales pay 15% capital gains on the gain over what you paid — losses are untaxed. Escaping the rat race counts side income after tax.
- Negotiate — On purchases, offers and loan quotes you can haggle up to twice. Each round is usually a coin flip: the terms move 20% in your favour or 20% against you, on top of where they stand. But the other side may walk away and the deal is off: one time in ten on the first round, and 15% if you push for a second.
Actions Panel
Between rolls, manage your finances:
- Buy — Purchase assets from the open market
- Sell — Sell owned assets for cash; loans secured on an asset are paid off from the sale
- Borrow — Take an interest-only bank loan (judged on Debt Burden), borrow against an asset you own (Debt Burden or Leverage), or draw on a credit card
- Pay — Pay off loans in full or in part. Bank loans are interest-only, so this is the only way their principal comes down; prepaying a mortgage or car loan lowers its payment
