Version 1.0.0: In the Beginning There Was a Paycheck

Every game begins with a first move. Ours was a paycheck, a pile of bills and one reasonable question: can you escape the 9 to 5 by buying things that pay you? Version 1.0.0 was the first time anyone could find out.

The promise

The first release note was short and a little breathless. Build your financial empire across real estate, stocks and businesses. Escape the 9 to 5. Hit the Fast Track. Chase your dreams. Four ideas, and the game has been built around them ever since.

A job, a salary and a lot of bills

Every player starts as somebody with a real job and real money problems. Taylor is a software developer with a good salary and the student loans to match. Jordan is a nurse. Alex owns a salon and pays themselves minimum wage. Avery is a trust-fund kid with money in the bank, no job and, according to the game's own description, zero work ethic. There are ten characters today, and every one of them begins by watching most of the paycheck disappear into expenses.

The trick is to stop grinding harder and start buying assets that pay you while you get on with your life. Once your passive income covers your costs, you have escaped the rat race. That moment is the first big win in the game, and it feels better than it should.

Then the Fast Track

Escape the 9 to 5 and you land on the Fast Track, where the money gets bigger and the dreams get dearer. A dream is something you want and can finally afford: a Tropical Island ("Your own paradise"), a Foundation ("Leave a legacy"), a Sports Team ("The ultimate flex") or a Private Jet ("Skip the TSA forever — charter it out"). Complete two dreams and you win. That is the only way to win, in single player and in multiplayer alike.

Real estate, stocks, businesses

The board is where the choices live. Land on a property and you can put money down and borrow the rest. Land on a stock and you are betting on the news. Land on a business and you are betting on people. Land on the shopping space and you are betting on your own self-control, which is the riskiest bet on the board.

No two games play the same, because the board is generated fresh every time.

What was not there yet

Version 1.0.0 had no taxes and no haggling. Nobody argued over a price and nobody paid the government a cent, which makes it the most unrealistic version of Moneyflow we have ever shipped. Both arrive later in this series, the taxman in 1.2.6 and the haggling in 1.2.7. The full story of how the game reached two app stores is in Going Public.
