Version 1.2.11: A Motel, a Dry Cleaner and a Room Full of Friends

Version 1.2.11 is the biggest update since the taxman: three new things to buy, a proper way to borrow, artwork on every card and a way to play with people you actually like.
Three new things in the Buy menu
The Buy menu now has a City Flat, a Dry Cleaner and a Roadside Motel. Pay cash, or put money down and finance the rest. Unlike the fixed items around them, these are listings: each game has its own live offer for each one, and the price and the yield drift with the economy. Yields rise in a boom, slide in a recession and drift back toward normal in recovery, so the motel you were pleased with last round may look very different this round.
- City Flat. A rented-out apartment. Low yield, steady tenants.
- Dry Cleaner. A small neighbourhood dry cleaner with a manager in place.
- Roadside Motel. Twelve rooms off the highway. Occupancy follows the economy.
Loans grow up
Cash loans now repay over a term. Every payday, landed on or passed, part of the payment comes off the balance, and when the last payment is made the loan closes and leaves your expenses. Because the payment now includes principal, these loans are judged on your income: your total loan payments have to fit within what the bank believes you can afford. Pay some off early and the schedule adjusts. The financial statement shows how many months each loan has left.
Need something more tailored? The Borrow menu has an Advanced credit panel with sliders for the amount, the term and an optional interest-only grace period. Grace is not free. The longer it lasts, the more the loan costs, and it must always be shorter than the term. The amount slider stops at whatever the bank will allow on the terms you chose. Mortgages and the other loans that buy something stay interest-only, as before.
One more thing to keep in mind: a loan with nothing behind it costs more than one the bank can secure. The bank has nothing to repossess and prices accordingly. That comes back around in 1.3.1.
A picture on every card
Every card in the deck now has its own illustration, tinted in the colour of the deck it belongs to. The pictures load in the background, so the game itself does not get heavier. Cards now fill the whole window, as wide as the cash bar, and on phones the property and business cards skip the picture to leave room for the numbers.
Choices, docked
Every decision button, whether it is buy, borrow and buy, sell, negotiate, pass or hold, now sits in a dock below the card alongside Sell, Loan and Pay. Only the card text scrolls, so the buttons never disappear when a card is long. The down payment and bridge-loan sliders are tucked behind an Adjust link, and buying uses the standard terms unless you say otherwise. Negotiate now sits beside Pass, and the secondary choices look like secondary choices. We also fixed a stutter on the borrow buttons, which used to read "+X/mo/mo".
Private rooms
Multiplayer with strangers is fun. Multiplayer with your friends is better, so 1.2.11 adds rooms. Open one, share the code or the invite link, and your friends join. You can remove people or resize the table, and you start with whoever turned up, optionally filling empty seats with bots. The link works even if your friend has not signed in yet: it survives the sign-in and joins them automatically.
- Room games are unrated, so nobody's rating is at stake.
- Seats are held for you if you leave the app for a moment, because sharing the invite sends it to the background.
- If the host leaves, the next member takes over.
- A room with two friends and a bot plays by the multiplayer rules and ends when only bots are left.
Fixes
The IPO card now respects its maximum number of shares, and margin is hidden on IPO cards, because an IPO purchase never took a loan and used to fail without saying so.
Next in the series is 1.2.12, which followed the same evening.
